Contrary to popular belief, massage during pregnancy is not a luxury, but an essential therapy recommended by health practitioners. Research highlights many benefits of prenatal massage for both the mother and her unborn child. Including but not limited to; reduced anxiety and depression, better sleep, improved labour outcomes, reduced sciatic pain and muscular discomfort etc. A happy mom-to-be bears a happy child!
Swedish massage is the recommended technique for pregnant women because it addresses many common discomforts associated with the skeletal and circulatory changes brought on by hormone shifts.
It involves the use of elbows, forearms and hands to soothe the muscles and relax the nerves. It uses gentle and long strokes with low pressure for leg massage and back massage during pregnancy.
A soft shoulder rub is quite soothing too. Light belly massage during pregnancy is not recommended, go for it only if your gynaecologist approves, please consult! Foot massage is strictly forbidden as the pressure under the soles of your feet can induce early labour. Pregnancy massage is only recommended for the third trimester.
